| Introduction The intermediate class, together with the basic class, are the mainstay of dog training as they consolidate any previous training and help reduce behavioural problems. Attending these classes on a regular basis reinforces the owner-dog relationship and also improves the social interaction of your dog with other dogs in a controlled environment. Generally all dogs find these sessions highly enjoyable.
Those who are progressing well in the basic class and experienced handlers will find the intermediate class ideal for consolidating what they have learnt in previous classes, refining their technique and maybe trying some new commands.
If you are unsure of which class is most suitable, please come along with your dog for a chat and we will be happy to advise you. Handlers of any age are welcome. Course Details Basic commands are covered such as: - Sit
- Down
- Stand
- Sit Stay (owner walks away)
- Down Stay
- Stand Stay
- Heel (including weave)
- Leave
- Recall (dog returns to you)
- Finish (dog sits next to you)
Repeating the basic commands helps dogs to refine their behaviour (attention, consistency, responsiveness and accuracy).
In addition, more advanced commands are taught such as: - Retrieve
- Distance control
- Sendaways
The classes are taught by Joan Hammersley who trains dogs to a national level. Trainers are on hand after the classes to discuss one on one any issues and questions that you may have.
Where, When and How Much? The intermediate class is held each Monday evening during term time (please refer to the calendar) at Chieveley Village Hall (indoors), starting at 8:00pm. The session lasts about 30 minutes. It is recommended that you arrive 15 minutes earlier to give your dog a chance to settle. There is a playing field behind the Hall to let the dogs run off a little steam before the class.
In order to attend a class, you must be a member of the society and membership costs £8.50 per person per year while each session costs £1 per dog. You can turn up and join on the day of the first class and pay your membership and class fee. We can accept cheques and cash but, sorry, no credit nor debit cards.
Once a member, you and your dog can drop-in on these classes whenever they are run (see calendar). There is no requirement to have attended previous classes. The advanced class, at 8:30pm, follows the intermediate class and you are most welcome to stay and observe a natural progression to the training.
What to Bring For each class, we recommend that you bring along: - Your dog wearing a collar or half check collar
- A lead (preferably leather)
- A bag of small treats (also available for 50p)
- A favourite toy
- Clean up materials
We also suggest that you wear trousers and comfortable shoes.
Restrictions For the safety of your dog and others, we require the full course of vaccinations to be completed prior to attending. Additionally, we cannot allow bitches in season. |
